Marciello's Mastery in Macau: Clinching Pole Position at FIA GT World Cup Qualification

In a thrilling display of skill and strategy, Raffaele Marciello outperformed his fellow Swiss driver, Edoardo Mortara, to secure the pole position in the FIA GT World Cup qualifying session. Marciello's achievement was marked by a last-gasp effort that saw him clinch the top spot by a mere 0.2 seconds, underscoring the intense competition and high stakes of the event.

Marciello's lap time of 2:14.542 seconds on the 6.12-kilometre Guia Circuit was not just a display of raw speed but also a testament to his tactical acumen and the team's strategic planning. He explained, "We were a bit late with the programme. After the red flag, we decided to go again on old tyres, so we were a bit off-sync compared to the others." This risk, however, paid off handsomely as he managed to secure two clean last laps, propelling him to the forefront of the race.

The victory was particularly sweet for Marciello, who emulated his 2019 achievement at the same event. "The car was amazing. It's a good result, I'm really happy. I feel confident with the car," he remarked, reflecting on his performance and the vehicle's capabilities.

Edoardo Mortara, a seven-time winner in Macau and representing Audi Sport Asia Team Absolute, closely trailed Marciello with a best lap of 2:14.578. Maro Engel, racing for Mercedes-AMG Team Craft-Bamboo Racing, experienced slight hindrances due to the windy conditions but still managed to complete the top three, 0.366s adrift of polesitter Marciello.

The session wasn't without its dramatic moments. Belgian Laurens Vanthoor, the early pacesetter, secured the fourth-quickest time for TORO Racing’s Porsche 911 GT3R, with Sheldon van der Linde of Team WRT’s BMW M4 GT3 rounding out the top five. This diverse representation from four different manufacturers highlighted the competitive nature of FIA GT racing.

Notably, Kévin Estre's crash into the tyre barriers at Lisboa Corner and Matteo Cairoli's off-track excursion at Turn 15 added to the session's intensity. The qualification race's results are now set to form the grid for Saturday’s 12-lap race, promising an exciting and unpredictable contest ahead.

Marciello's triumph in the qualification race sets a high bar for the main event, showcasing not just his driving prowess but also the strategic depth and teamwork essential in top-tier GT racing. The FIA GT World Cup continues to be a platform where the best in motorsport converge, pushing the limits of speed, skill, and strategy.
